BEST OF BRISBANE’S Kid-Friendly Hikes. Mums and Grandparents! Keen to have an actual reason to wear your cute activewear in the best weather of the year? Get the kids out for fresh air on one of Brisbane’s many kid-friendly hiking trails. Nothing too strenuous, just beautiful scenery, a chance to spot some wildlife and maybe even an excuse to pack some big people tasty snacks for you, and vegemite or Nutella sandwiches and water bottles for the little people.

The K9 and I enjoy Toohey Forest Reserve, Nathan. Yes, it is very close to town, but you feel like you’ve hiked out to the Granite Belt. A multitude of tracks meanders through a forest dotted with sandstone boulders, and you can walk for as little or as long as you like, with most of the walks classed as easy or moderate. You might even spot koalas, lizards and kookaburras along the way, and three different picnic areas where you can stretch out on a rug with lunch.

At Daisy Hill Conservation Park there’s more than koalas. Lots of trails, including a boardwalk that’s wheelchair and stroller-friendly. You can look for wallabies, or make the old quarry, which is now a placid lake, your goal. Some kids ride their bikes or horses on the trails.

Mt Coot-tha Reserve will give those legs a little burn, but the ice cream at the top more than compensates! The 1.9km walk takes about 30 minutes each way, or you can choose a handful of shorter, flatter trails around the reserve.

Enoggera Reservoir, The Gap – Flat, just 5kms and a swim for the brave at the end? The next-door Walkabout Creek Cafe means you don’t even have to pack a picnic, and it’s all only 30 minutes from the city.

Rainforest Circuit, Mount Glorious
The D’Aguilar National Park is mammoth, and the Rainforest Circuit is ideal for young hikers. Winding through towering fig trees and over crystal clear creeks, it’s beautifully shady and cool (great for the little hat rebels! )
